Three weeks ago on December 11th I wrote my last blog. At the time I truly thought I would write every couple of days due to the grand experience I was going to have AWAY FROM SCHOOL. Turns out my life outside of school is really quite....well....boring. With that in mind I prepare to begin the final regular college quarter of my life. In preparation of this new quest I write the 10 things I learned during my time away from the classroom. Ladies and Gentleman!! Let's Blog:
Things I learned over the past three weeks:
1) The Seahawks made history tonight by becoming the first team in NFL history to win their division with a losing record. Not only to they get to play into the postseason they get to HOST a playoff game. A home playoff game is a coveted asset to have and to be rewarded for a 7 - 9 season with a home playoff game against a team that won the Superbowl last year and currently stands with an 11 - 5 record is a tad bit ridiculous. So ridiculous in fact that there is a good chance the rules for making the postseason could very well change next year making it impossible for another team to duplicate what the Seahawks accomplished tonight. A once in a lifetime opportunity. As I said, history was made. Go Hawks!!
2) Side career? I finished three videos during this time, one of which was a huge family wedding video from my trip to St. Louis back in October. I have become very good at filming the events and then editing the film down to a watchable storyline with music to bring out the intended emotion. Someone told me they paid someone $2000 to make a video of their wedding and it "sucked" compared to what I did for my cousin. Well, I said, "I guess you were just born into the wrong family". One of my projects for my classroom will be to put together a "video classroom portrait" based on the "My Family Portrait" project that has been online for many years now. My favorite to this point is on the link below: It is emotional, funny, and makes you want to be with your family. http://www.vimeo.com/1925071
3) Snow rules!! I spent 5 days in Eastern Washington with my family in the 0 - 12 degree weather. The snow was so cold that we needed one gallon of water per igloo block to make the snow stick together. Eventually we make a HUGE igloo that my daughter and I tried to sleep in one night when we realized just how cold 1 degree is. It's cold man. Plus when the blocks of ice sit for 8 hours in sub 0 temps....it becomes one giant block of ice. That will remain pretty strong until the spring acid rains return:(
4) Mythbusters!! Quickly becoming my favorite show on TV by testing myths such as dipping your hand into a pot of molten lead resting at 900°F. How is this possible? The answer will blow your mind. It is possible, and they show you how!
5) Xmas lights are da bomb! For our eyes AND the companies supplying our electricity. A local botanical garden puts on a large display every year and this year they had to start charging $5/head because they claim it costs over $500,000 to put on the display for the three week period every year. Whoa!! Each of those little bulbs burns 5 watts. Watt? I said that each of the little Xmas lights that you see hanging from a house uses 5 watts. Watt? Nevermind. Take a gander at this Electricity cost calculator before you put up Xmas lights of your own. It'll make you think twice. Click Here.
6) Amazon.com giftcards are also da bomb! This is weird because I have never once used the term "da bomb" before in my life, but yet I've used it twice in this single blog. For good reason through. You can buy ANYTHING on Amazon's website and the giftcard is your passport to by anything you want. And since most older people you know have no idea Amazon sells more than books, it makes you look really smart...AND all they have to do is go to the local Grocery store to find them for you. Xmas, BDays, hack even Festivus!! You can finally see what it would be like to live in a materialistic world where you can buy everything you ever wanted...even love and friendship!!! Can you do better than free love and friendship?
7) New Years Eve is for the young. We spent the last night of 2010 with people all over the age of 55. It was a quiet evening as my wife and I were able to keep everyone awake until midnight only to watch the group mildly eek out "Happy New Year" and "good night everyone" in pretty much the same sentence. By 12:02 am on the first day of 2011...crickets!!
8) Dreams. I had one of the most vivid dreams of my recent memory the other night. I can't get the images out of my head because I'm not sure what they mean. The dream came directly from my heart. I know this because the theme of the dream seemed to be "Just follow your heart silly". The good news is I am. I am two quarters away from being a full time teacher, unfortunately the dream didn't have anything to do with teaching. What it did have to do with was the most beautiful thing I could have ever imagined. The takeaway for now: I want to have dreams like that so much more often. (For those of you with gutter minds, the answer is no).
9) Winter's Bone. A dark movie that is getting rave reviews. Why I am not sure as it was a window into the world of small town organized crime. It took me back to a time I never had in my life where if you wanted something, you just walked the 800 yards to your neighbors house. If they didn't have what you needed, you went 800 more yards down the dirt road to the next house...and so on. The first house of the movie was a girl just walking around looking for her dad. If you like dark, slow moving movies than this one is up your alley. But I would say for a slow moving dark movie that rocks....always head to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. One of the best films of the past decade hands down.
10) I can't wait to get back to school. Three weeks of seeing what my life is like without all the hubub, the interaction, and the experience of teaching was enough for me. Tomorrow morning I look forward to heading back to class. A feeling I didn't think I would have ever had. A feeling that gives me inspiration and motivation.
Until next time. Go Hawks! Go Huskies! and Go Teachers!!
Funny for the day:
What is red and smells like Blue Paint?
